1st Generation - Adam ( אדם )
Adam means "Son of The Red Earth" (Man / Human)
2nd Generation - Seth ( שית )
Seth means "Appointed" (or Placed / To Set Something in Place)
3rd Generation - Enosh ( אנוש )
Enosh means "Human Being / Man" (Mortality which is Subject to Death) or "Mortal"
4th Generation - Kenan ( קינן )
Kenan means to (קינן) "To Possess" or "Lament / To Sorrow". The root word Qonen ( קון ) - Strong's 6969 - means to lament.
5th Generation - Mahalaleel ( מהללאל )
MahalaleEL means "The Shining One of El (G*d)" or "Praise of G*d"
This name appears exactly Seven Times in the Scriptures.
Quick Side Note:
Anytime a Hebrew name ends with "El", the name always has something to do with G*d - thus most Angels have names ending in "El" - is in "MichaEL" (“who is like G*d?” or “gift from G*d.”) or GabriEL (“G*d is my strength” or “Hero of G*d.”).
6th Generation Jered ( ירד )
Jared means "He Descends" (Descending)
Quick Side Note:
In Hebrew, it's pronounced Yered and not Jered. There is no letter for "J" in Hebrew. The Letter "J" was invented for the Italian language by a man called “Gian Giorgio Trissino” in the year 1524 and it evidently wasn't widely used until years later, as the "J" is not present in the1611 King James Bible. The best I can tell, the "J" first appeared in the1769 Blaney version of the KJV Bible.
7th Generation - Enoch ( חנוך )
Enoch means Dedicated (Trained or Disciplined) or Teach or Train
We are simply not told much about Enoch in The Bible, however we do know that He was highly favored and he "walked with G*d". He is one of the two people mentioned in The Bible who never physically died. The only other mentioned is Elijah, who was taken up in in a "whirlwind".
"And as they still went on and talked, behold, chariots of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven." - 2 Kings 2:11
Of course, we all know that Yeshua conquered death and was resurrected, but he still died (for our sins).
Here is what we do know about Enoch, as given to us in The Holy Bible:
*G*d took Enoch up, much like Elijah.
"And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:
And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years:
And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him. - Genesis 5:22-24
*Enoch did not physically die:
"By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God." - Hebrews 11:5
*Much more about Enoch was known to the Yeshua's Apostles. From what Jude tells us in his letter, we can deduce that they knew and studied "The Book of Enoch" - as it the only source for any information about Enoch's Prophecy. This is why I highly recommend that we read that book...and take it with a grain of salt, of course.
“Wild waves of the sea, casting up the foam of their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved forever.
It was also about these that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones,
to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” - Jude 1:13-15
It is extremely significant to understand that the significance of The Seventh Generation of Mankind being taken up to heaven. Seven is the number of physical perfection and can be observed throughout all of physical creation.
8th Generation - Methuselah ( מתושלח )
Methuselah "When He Is Dead It Shall Be Sent" or "His Death Shall Send"
This name is compound of two Hebrew words "Mut" ( מות ) and "Shalah" ( שלח ). There is much we can learn from the combination of these two words, other than the meaning shown above. As I compiling all of this information, I ran across a great site that shows it best:
I took a couple screenshots, shown below, expanding the definitions of these two Hebrew words that "Mut" ( מות ) and "Shalah" ( שלח ) that make up the name Methuselah ( מתושלח ).
The term that I really want to bring to your attention here is the none "Sheluha" ( שלוחה ) which "refers to a shoot or branch." We know that Yeshua is the Branch of Righteousness and through our Faith in Him we have been grafted into The Nation of Israel. Yeshua was the "Branch" that was prophesized by Isaiah, Jeremiah and Zechariah.
"In that day shall the branch of the LORD be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel." - Isaiah 4:2
"There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots." - Isaiah 11:1
"Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth." - Jeremiah 23:5
"In those days, and at that time, will I cause the Branch of righteousness to grow up unto David; and he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land." - Jeremiah 33:15
"Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH."
Zechariah 3:8
Yeshua even confirms this to us in The Gospel of John:
"I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing." - John 15:5
This information about "The Branch", found within the name of Methuselah further confirms the point that I am making in this post, as you will soon see.
Throughout the Bible we see that it is the next generation who pays for the sins of their fathers. We could say that the that we are either cursed or blessed, based off the sins or actions of our fathers before us. This is spoken of several times throughout scripture. The best example of this is to look at the lives of King David, David's son King Solomon and Solomon's son King Rehoboam. We know that David was highly favored by G*d and that G*d blessed Solomon with a peaceful reign primarily because of the relationship that G*d had with David. The name Solomon comes from the root word Shalom ( שלום ) which literally means "Peace".
"Behold, a son shall be born to you who shall be a man of rest. I will give him rest from all his surrounding enemies. For his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quiet to Israel in his days." - 1 Chronicles 22:9
Solomon started off really well, but he didn't keep it up...
"And Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD, and went not fully after the LORD, as did David his father." - 1 Kings 11:6
We see the blessing passed from David to Solomon, and we can see the curse being passed from Solomon to Rehoboam. Rehoboam was initially a king of the United Monarchy of Israel, but later saw his rule limited to only the Kingdom of Judah in the south following a rebellion by the ten northern tribes of Israel. This all happened early in his reign, thus the sins of Solomon put this all into place long before Rehoboam ever became king. The lesson to be learned here is that must always right in the eyes of HaShem, for the sake of our children, as they will pay for our sins.
All of this is very significant in understanding why Methuselah was given the longest life recorded in the Bible and why G*d waited until Methuselah died before he sent the flood to destroy the earth. To be taken up the way Enoch was, we know that he was highly favored by G*d, to say the least. Since Methuselah was Enoch’s son, G*d blessed Methuselah and allowed him to live out his long life of 969 years, before the destruction of the earth. The year that Methuselah died, G*d sent The Flood. Though the Bible doesn’t explicitly say this, we can see it as fact, just by putting together the details given and and doing the simple math.
Methuselah was 187 years old when he had his son Lamech.
"When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he fathered Lamech." - Genesis 5:25
When Lamech was 182 years old he had his son Noah.
"When Lamech had lived 182 years, he fathered a son and called his name Noah, saying, “Out of the ground that the LORD has cursed, this one shall bring us relief from our work and from the painful toil of our hands.” - Genesis 5:28-29
The flood happened in the 600th year of Noah’s life.
"In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst forth, and the windows of the heavens were opened." - Genesis 7:11
When we add these years up, we get the the total age of Methuselah, 969 years.
"Thus all the days of Methuselah were 969 years, and he died." - Genesis 5:27
187+182+600 = 969 (The Age of Methuselah When He Died)
*Therefor, we can see that G*d held off from sending The Flood until Methuselah had died.
9th Generation - Lamech ( למך )
Lamech means to "To Be Low or Humiliated"
Lamech is composed of the root word, "Makak" ( מכך ), which means to bring low or to humiliate. Anytime a Lamed ( ל ) is placed at the beginning of a word, it means "to" or "unto".
10th Generation - Noah ( נוח )
Noah (or Noach in Hebrew) means "Rest" or "Repose."
If we put all of these meanings of Names of the First Ten Generations - we can see what see a foretelling Yeshua and brief summary of the future gospel:
Adam --- Man
Seth --- (is) appointed
Enosh --- mortal
Kenan --- sorrow
Mahalalel --- The Shining One of G*d
Jared --- shall come down
Enoch --- teaching
Methuselah --- his death shall bring
Lamech --- the low
Noah --- rest
