I'm really sorry to say this, but I truly feel that there are a large number of Christians who have been fooled into believing that Yeshua's sacrifice gives us freedom from Old Testament Laws, I know because I used to be one of them.
This cannot be further from the truth because if you are a true follower of Yeshua, then you have been grafted into the nation of Israel therefor all of these OT laws apply to you. The Torah (Law) was given to us as the highest blessing, so that we could purify our selfish human nature in order to become one with our Creator. It's not only Jewish people that the first five books of the Bible (The Torah) apply to, they apply to us all. There are 613 commandments (not just 10) that we all need to observe each day. I understand that this idea goes against what many of us have been brought up believing, so rather than trying to convince anyone of this, I will show you what the Bible says. That's always where we must go for authority.
Wherever there is darkness, there can not be light; this is a simple observation that anyone can see. Turn a light on and the room is no longer dark. Light destroys darkness, and G*d is pure light and love; he does not dwell in darkness and that is what separate us from him. We cannot truly obtain the light of our Creator until we fully reject the darkness and that is the purpose for the laws of the Old Testament.
"Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." - Matthew 7:22-23
"But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not." - Matthew 25:12
It's chilling to think that on that "Great and Terrible Day", when The LORD returns, that there will be believers who will be left behind, but that's exactly what Yeshua is saying in the above passages. It simply is not enough to believe but we must apply it all to our lives in everyway possible.
So how can we sure that he knows us?
The answer is simple, we must keep his commandments and he makes this very clear in the following passages:
"And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning." - 1 John 2:3-7
"If ye love me, keep my commandments." - John 14:15
As Christians, we have much to learn from the Jewish culture and they have much to learn from us as well. So, we are both fathers and children in this aspect. The very last verse of our Old Testament prophesizes this:
"And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse." - Malachi 4:6
Thankfully, the Jewish culture has been observing The Torah for centuries, but they're incomplete without the Salvation of Yeshua. In this we can see that Jews are as Fathers to Christians, as they can teach Christians observance of The Torah and Christians are as Fathers to Jews as they can teach Jews about Yeshua. This is what is being said in Malachi 4:6.
"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." - John 14:6
Yeshua warns Christians who feel that the OT Laws are written for only for Jews and do not apply to them in the following verses:
"Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled." - Matthew 5:17-18
"And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments." - Matthew 19:16-17
"Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus." - Revelation 14:12
We are all brothers and sisters and there should be no division between us. We were not put here to judge each other, but to love one another; for we truly are Fathers and Children.
“Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth.” - Psalms 119:142
Much Love and Blessings!
All of this true, except the many laws that revolve around you beating or stoning somebody if they did something wrong. Yeshua (Jesus) gave us the opportunity to forgive instead of doing that.
All of the other laws do, even the food laws. I feel pretty bad every time I eat pork!
