The Amidah Prayer

Updated: Dec 8, 2022

For nearly 2,000 years, the Amidah has been the most foundational prayer in Jewish tradition. After the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 C.E., the Amidah Prayer was officially declared a substitute for sacrifice, by the Council of Jamnia. There should be little doubt that Yeshua and his disciples prayed some form of this prayer many times. Referred to as "The Standing Prayer", this is a very powerful prayer and I would highly recommend learning this one today. There are 18 blessings in the Amidah Prayer and 18 is very important number as it is the Gematria Value of חי (Chai - Life).

When we learn to pray in Hebrew, we are eliminating the spiritual confusion of our confounded language that goes all the back to The Tower of Babel. Genesis 11:6-7 tells us the following, "And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech."

I can truly confirm that praying in Hebrew will ultimately bring you to have a much closer relationship with G*d, as we make Our Father proud when we learn his language. However, in order to pray most effectively, we do not merely utter the Hebrew words mechanically without truly understanding their deep meaning. In this video, Brother Yirah breaks down the specifics of this prayer, line by line, and explains the mystical significance of each word.

Here is a very interesting article which shows parallels between the Amidah Prayer and The Lord's Prayer.
