Written In The Earth

Updated: Mar 8, 2023

Anytime we run across something in The Bible that is stated twice, we need to pay close attention to it. In John's Gospel, we are told about Yeshua writing something in the ground with his finger and John's states this twice in the section. We are not explicitly told what Yeshua was writing, but I believe that we can do some investigative work and get an idea about this. First off, let's check out what John says about this and then we will put some other pieces together from there.

"And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,

They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.

Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?

This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.

So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground." - John 8:3-8

Since we know that Yeshua is The Word Made Flesh, it should not be overlooked that The Ten Commandments given to Moses were written by "The Finger of G*d":

"And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God." - Exodus 31:18

"And the LORD delivered unto me two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words, which the LORD spake with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly." - Deuteronomy 9:10

Yeshua tells us the He is The Source of Living Water (or Fountain of Living Waters):

"Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?" - John 4:10-11

"He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water." - John 7:38

Now that we have established this much, I believe that there is a section in Jeremiah which gives us the answer to what we Yeshua was writing in the ground (or the earth, as he puts it):

"Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.

For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

As the partridge sitteth on eggs, and hatcheth them not; so he that getteth riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool.

A glorious high throne from the beginning is the place of our sanctuary.

O LORD, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters." - Jeremiah 17:7-13

Yeshua is The Jewish Messiah who was sent to Israel. He is indeed "The Fountain of Living Waters" and was forsaken by The Scribes and Pharisees, who were trying to test Him. I believe that He was literally writing their names in the earth. The names of Yeshua's believers are written in The Book of Life, to have one's name written in the earth is akin to be sentenced to death.

"You hide Your face, they are dismayed;

You take away their spirit, they expire

And return to their dust." - Psalm 104:29

“What profit is there in my blood, if I go down to the pit?

Will the dust praise You? Will it declare Your faithfulness?" - Psalm 30:9

"then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it." - Ecclesiastes 12:7

Interesting. Talk about gaining the world and losing your soul as stated in, Mark 8:36.

For sure - those folks were breaking The Torah to start with.

“If a man commits adultery with the wife of his neighbor, both the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. - Leviticus 20:10

Notice how The Torah specifies that two parties should be put to death - not one.

Wow! That was amazing! I agree with you! I pray my name is not written in the dust but is written in the Book of Life. The Lord is my only hope in this fallen world and I feel such sorrow for those who refuse to turn to Him and away from the wickedness that is everywhere now. God bless you and family brother! I continually 'look up' in anticipation of Yeshua's return, Bo Yeshua, BO!!

Thank you so much for your comment, Julia, it is always such a blessing to talk with you. Yes, I'm beginning to really be torn about the shape of this world myself...on a whole other level. I genuinely feel so much sorrow for non believers and the wicked and I pray for them daily. Yeshua taught us the whole of the law hangs on these two: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind" and "Love your neighbor as yourself". It's getting more and more clear to me that these tend to be in opposition to one another. I pray for that balance between the spiritual and the physical,…
